Evie was down for a mid-morning nap, a common occurrence for her as she got closer to the end of her pregnancy. She was 39 weeks along and it was exhausting but it was also difficult to sleep long, she couldn't get comfortable or would have to get up to use the bathroom often. Like normal her nap was a short one before she was woken, only it was a pain in her stomach which while those weren't uncommon either it was stronger than normal and she that she wouldn't be able too just change positions and make it go away so she could go back to sleep. Little Lucas was just about ready to enter the world.
Of course it would be that morning she went into labour. The only morning in weeks where she was home totally alone. Alex was at hockey tryouts and Mae was at work though she was almost never home anymore anyway. Evie didn't want Alex to miss his tryout, though she did wish he was there, but once the contraction eased off she called him. She knew he'd come home right away no matter how much she tried to convince him to finish the tryout first so she was glad that the call went to voicemail, hopefully that meant he wouldn't get the message until he was done.
Her midwife was her next call. Evie had opted for a home birth so that she could have some privacy throughout her a labour and for at least the first few days of having her son. If the paparazzi caught her going into the hospital it would be all over the tabloids and she wouldn't get a moment of peace once she walked back out the hospital doors.
And still catching a break between contractions Evie called her mom and Mae to let them know, too. Though she didn't really want anybody but Alex around until after Lucas was born, so she was glad Mae was out and nobody was allowed to come over yet, she knew they'd want to know that she was in labour. Mae in case she did come home so she wouldn't be surprised and her mom because she was on call if Evie needed her for support or anything at all really.
Evie wasn't surprised when Alex burst into the bedroom 20 minutes later, "I'm guessing you didn't finish your tryout?" She asked.
"Of course not. I'll reschedule. I wasn't leaving you alone."He wrapped his arms around her waist, as much as they could fit around anyway, "how are you doing?"
She leaned her head on his shoulder, she was glad he was there even he missed his tryout for it. "Okay so far. I'm just really excited, we're going to meet our son, finally." She started to tear up a bit.
It was less exciting 20 hours later when she was still in labour with no end in sight. She'd been regretting her choice to deliver at home for much of that time, at least the hospital could give her medication for the pain, but she was sticking to her plan. She might not if it wasn't for Alex's support however, but he was there for every contraction, every time she wanted to give in, he was there to calm her down and keep her on track.
Another 4 hours later, after a full 24 hours of labour, and Evie was knelt over the bedroom's loveseat crying. She was beyond miserable and ready to give in. Even Alex couldn't do much to help her anymore. But there was still one last hope left. "I want my mom," Evie cried. Her mom had been through the labour process twice already, she had to have some advice. But at least, even if she didn't she'd have a shoulder to cry on, sometimes there was nothing more comforting than your mom hugging you and telling you it would be okay.
"I'll go call her for you, and I'll be right back," Alex whispered. "Just hang in there, you're still doing awesome, okay."
It seemed like hours before her mother arrived even though Evie knew it was probably only about 5 minutes, her mother would have gotten there even faster than she should have been able to. Evie was still crounched over the loveseat when her mother got there.
"Hey baby girl," her mother whispered crouching beside her.
"Mom... it hurts. I don't know how much more I can take."
"I know, baby girl, I know. You're doing awesome though. I know it's hard, but it's going to be over soon and believe me none of this going to matter when you hold your baby for the first time. It's the most amazing feeling in the world and you'll forget all this in an instant. Just remember what you're doing this for, who you're doing it for... your son, that beautiful baby boy. Just hang in there, for him. And foI know you're trying really hard to stick to your plan, but it's okay if it is too much and you want to go to the hospital. You've been at this for so long and I know how hard it is, it's beyond reasonable to have just had enough and they can make it easier and faster."
"I want to... so bad... but I don't. I don't know what to do."
"Why don't we give it a bit longer? Just try to relax, I know it's hard right now, but it'll help you're too tense. So just breathe, relax. Remember we're here for you, you've got me and Alex at your side and your dad and Mae are waiting in the living room. I know there's not much we can do, but we'll do whatever we can. Let your frustrations out on us if you need to, we won't take it personally. Okay?"
"Okay." Evie muttered.
Evie stuck it out at home for 3 more hours, despite increasing encouragement from her mom to switch to the hospital she hung on to that slight bit of hesitation that kept her at home. But her midwife had decided that had gone too long without progress and the hospital was no longer only and option. Of course, Evie didn't even hesitate at that, she could no longer get to the hospital fast enough.
After medication to restart her labour failed, Evie was given a c-section. But after that it seemed no time at all until Lucas was snuggled up in her arms, perfectly healthy despite all the commotion. And while she hadn't exactly forgotten all she went through, and had already vowed to never ever have another beby, he was worth every minute of pain she'd been through. He was perfect.
