Evie and Mae hadn’t talked in 2 weeks. Mae had left as soon she woke up the next day after Evie had brought her home from the club, despite Evie’s pleading to talk she walked out without a word. Evie had tried calling a few times too but Mae never answered or returned her calls. She’d even tried to get her mom to help who promised she’d try but said Evie would probably just have to be patient, Mae would come around eventually, “You know how her moods are. She’ll get over it.”
But with 2 weeks having passed it had come to an important day for Evie, so she put her sister out of her mind to focus on more important, and happier , matters. She was about to find out the gender of her baby. She couldn’t be more excited, saying "he" or "she" sounded a lot nicer than “it”. Plus she was going to go shopping with Alex for baby stuff after, assuming the appointment went how they wanted.
It was agonizing waiting as the ultrasound technician tried to identify the gender, it seemed to be taking forever. Alex squeezed Evie’s hand and they waited as patiently as they could

“Can you at least tell me it’s not twins?” Evie joked after a few minutes. Half joked. Her mom had gone in to find out the gender when pregnant with Evie and Mae, only to find out it was twins.
“Don’t worry it’s just the one baby… and… we’ve got the gender... Congratulations, it’s a boy.”
“A boy! Aww… a son.” Evie started to tear up.
Alex just kissed her forehead and teared up a bit himself. It was possibly more exciting to him than to Evie, since it was the first time he’d even gotten to be there for an appointment, the first time he got to be there for an ultrasound instead of just having Evie show him the image through the computer when they video chatted.

Evie went to call her parents as soon as she got home, she’d promised she would. She’d also promised Mae that she would be the very first to know, but she probably would care anymore. Though, Evie decided to call her first anyway if for no other reason than to make sure it wasn’t something else Mae could use against her if she was going to be immature and moody.
As she expected Mae wasn’t answering and the call went to voicemail. “I promised I’d tell you first, and I really wish you were talking to me so I could have. But I tried, so you can’t be mad that I didn’t. And whether you listen to this or not you’re still going to be the first I tell… it’s a boy. Please just call me, I still need you to help me shop for him. Do it for your nephew, if not for me.”
Alex wrapped an arm around her noticing her frown “Hey no being sad today, right?”
“I know but…”
“She’ll get over it and everything will be fine. Don’t worry about it. Just focus on the fact that we’re having a son, and nobody can ruin that. And we can start decorating the nursery, so why don’t I go get stuff out of the car while you call your parents.”

Evie smiled at the idea of decorating the nursery, it had been difficult waiting for the gender so that she knew what to get and she and Alex had found a lot of stuff already in the few hours since they’d found out they were having a boy. She nodded and started to dial her parents.
Her mom answered after only one ring, “It’s about time! What took so long? We’re all here, on speaker, waiting. Well, most of us, anyway…”
Evie didn’t even need to ask who was missing, but she shrugged it off. Alex was right, she couldn’t let Mae ruin her excitement. “Sorry, we just got caught up shopping for our son!”

“Good, we need another boy in the family.” Her dad said with a slight chuckle.
“A boy, how lovely. Of course if it was a girl we’d be able to pass tons of stuff on to you, nothing for a boy though.” Her mom said.
“I think we’ll be fine, we bought him so much already and we still have a few months to get more. It’s just an excuse to shop and look at all the cute baby stuff anyway. I’ll need your help, mom, and Mae’s, if she ever talks to me again.”
“So she hasn’t talked to you? I was going to ask, we haven’t seen or heard from her in a couple days. She got upset and stormed off and hasn’t come home since. I was hoping she’d talk to you, even if you’re fighting right now too. You’re still her best friend, I was hoping she’d put the fight aside.”
“What was she upset about? Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?”

“Didn’t want to worry you. Mae has her fits and gets over them, I hoped either she’d talk to you or come home. And she was upset because we told her it was time to stop lying in bed sulking all day.”
“Well, I called her to tell her about the baby and asked her to call back, so hopefully she does. I’ll let you know, and you let me know too, okay?”
“Of course dear. Sorry to bring the mood down by the way, I’m just starting to worry a bit.”
“Don’t worry about it mom. And I’m sure she’s fine, just being Mae. I’m going to try calling her again, and then maybe swing by the place her and Julianne were going to move into, maybe she’s there. Okay? I’ll keep you updated.”
“Okay, talk to you soon. Sorry, again.”
“It’s okay, really.” Evie hung up.
Alex had been walking past with a couple bags of stuff, but stopped to put the bags down and hug her. “Hey, what’s wrong.”
“Turns out Mae can ruin this day after all. We don’t know where she is, and I’m really worried about her.” She may have told her mother that everything would be okay, but she didn’t really believe it. To be moody was just like Mae, to vanish wasn’t.
Alex held her even tighter and just let her cry on his shoulder. “It’ll be okay. We’ll find her. I promise.”
